The Shagfoal

Rural townsfolk of the British Isles are wary of crossing the quiet unpeopled moors in fear of the shagfoal. Also known as the tatterfoal or gytrash, the shagfoal looks like a horse, mule, or donkey covered in thick heavy black or dark grey fur, but its large wide-open eyes that glow like hot coals give away it is no ordinary beast of burden. Many travelers have been led off the path by the eye’s light into a secluded place. Once the victim is far enough from safety the shag foal’s long sharp teeth gnash, gnaw, and snap.
Legends say the shagfoal is not a creature of flesh and blood, but the ghost of evil persons that had died a violent death. Their bitterness and spite drive them to attack, trick and haunt those living near where they lived. Supposedly, the shagfoal enjoys experiencing others misery. It might cause misfortune, or sense the future, but seeing is often a forecast of tragedy to come.
The thoroughbred racing horse, Damascus, has earned the nickname “Shagfoal” among many members of the gambling community. This nickname is apt, due to Damascus’s glossy black color and her winning ten of her last twelve races due competitor's accidents during a race.
