While celebrating the victory of renowned wyvern-rider Lumpy in a London
pub, gnome mage Eric Smith, halfling thief/child impersonator Terry
Grey, and consulting detective wolfman J. Wolfington III were accosted
by rowdy fans of a rival wyvern rider. At the brawls conclusion, one of the
blaggards escaped and 3 died at the hands of the party.
The next
day, the group returned to the pub for a drink, and were approached by
White Chapel gambling crime lord Booker, an infamously ruthless gnome.
Booker revealed the dead thugs worked for him. While he did not begrudge
the group for defending themselves, he felt they owe him a favor. He
tasked them (while threateningly flanking the group with John and Harold
, an ogre mucker and horseman tough )with finding out why a small time
crook named Matheson Ratch hadn’t repaid a loan Booker made him a
month ago for 40 pounds, and get his money for him. The group agreed to
help.
After arriving at Mr. Ratch’s cellar apartment (and
subsequently breaking in), a quick search was made but little was found
except for a recently dated and notarized deed to a small tenement
building in Mayfair. While examining the document, a group of rough
characters entered and demanded the party to tell them where Matheson
Ratch is. Not believing the groups protestations the thugs attacked the party.
Thanks to some expert
hairbrush wielding from the halfing, the thugs were incapacitated. One
was kept conscious for questioning. The dwarf told the party, they were
sent to get the money that Mr. Ratch had borrowed from Stan
“The Stein” (a local gangboss).
After checking their attackers for
weapons (and assorted valuables) J. Wolfington III found a voucher for a
free drink at an upscale pub called “the Mouse’s Head”, and quickly
left the party to use it. Meanwhile Terry Grey investigated the deed and found that it was legitamte.
Eric Smith found a rare policeman in White Chapel and told
him he saw several suspicious men breaking into a celler apartment and
directed him to Ratch’s home. The policeman brushed him off
reassuringly, indicating he would look into it eventually. Eric insulted
him, and the policeman took him in for questioning.
At the Mouse’s
Head, Wolfington had enjoyed his drink so much he had forgotten that he
had no money and had ordered 5 more. When the bartender grew suspicious
and demanded money, the wolfman punched him the face and ran for it.
Unfortunately the pub’s patrons caught up with him.
He and Eric
arrived at the tenement building in Mayfair Ratch had bought, a bit
bruised but ready. Terry Grey had already arrived. After forcing their
way in they began exploring.
On the second floor they found a
locked door. Looking in the keyhole they saw a man laying on a bed
nervously. Before he could knock, Eric Smith heard loud fumbling noises
on the third floor and went to investigate. As he walked down the hall
something grabbed his foot.
